FATHERS DAY

Sunday is Father’s Day, and as such I find myself recalling experiences with my dad today.

I have the very best of dads. When I think of my dad, I think of what Jesus said of Nathanael one in whom “no deceit” is found (John 1:47).

One day my older brother and I got into it. I have no idea what the fight was about but we were in trouble again! On this day my brother put books down the back side of his pants. I think we’d seen it done in a Tom Sawyer movie. Dad came into the room for our punishment. Jim was first, as dad wound up for the spanking he noticed the books in his pants. Then the most unusual thing happened, dad began to laugh and laugh... That day there was no punishment.

I don’t remember getting in trouble much after that. We love our dad and our dad loves us.

A writer in the book of Proverbs writes: “He who spares his rod hates his son, but he who loves him disciplines him promptly.” (Proverbs 13:24). That rod is the measurement of correction not necessarily a switch or a belt. My boys are grown now but I can remember the rod we used (My wife and I), it was a swat on the bottom, and as they grew older it was time out then finally grounding them.

Character growth comes with discipline. My brother and I have not only been close but we have been best friends too. No doubt this is the result of life together but also the discipline of a loving dad. Dad and I disciplined out of love. Discipline comes to us for protection and growth.

I hope you can celebrate a good dad like me on Sunday. If that cannot happen remember you can celebrate the Heavenly Father and the relationship that is available to you through the blood of Christ.

When we talk about love, there is none greater than the love our Heavenly Father has for you. We used to sing these lyrics “Deep and Wide, There’s a fountain Flowing, Deep and Wide”. God’s love is wider, deeper and higher than any earthly dad. He will discipline us because He loves us.

What a great Heavenly Father!

God Bless You and HAPPY FATHER’S DAY!
